Selenium is highly toxic and can conduct electricity and heat. The conductivity changes sharply with the intensity of light and can be enhanced by more than 1000 times, making it a photoconductive material. The metallicity is between sulfur and tellurium, and it can react directly with hydrogen and halogens to form selenides. Selenium can be obtained by using the residue from heavy metal smelting as raw material, oxidizing the selenide into selenium dioxide, converting it into selenite, selenite or corresponding salts, and then reducing it with sulfur dioxide.
