Germanium is a chemical element, with the element symbol Ge, atomic number 32, and atomic weight 72.64. It is located in the fourth period and IVA group in the periodic table of chemical elements. Germanium is a gray white quasi metal with luster and hardness, belonging to the carbon group. Its chemical properties are similar to those of tin and silicon in the same group. It is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid, or dilute alkaline solutions, but soluble in aqua regia, concentrated sulfuric acid. It has amphiphilic properties and is therefore soluble in molten alkali, peroxides, alkali metal nitrates, or carbonates. It is relatively stable in air.
